Abstract:

Several environmental processes can perturb the stress state in the earth’s crust and disturb the slip dynamics along a pre-existing fault. Beyond natural processes (like erosion or fault network interactions for instance), some anthropogenic forcings have been observed to affect the reactivation of pre-existing faults, in particular fluid injection activities. One of the most evident observations is the large increase of earthquakes occurrence in 2009 within the central US, following the start of fluid injection activities in the area (see joined figure).

As the majority of injection induced earthquakes are linked to energy projects, this issue has become the focus of several present research studies and discussions. Many aspects of induced fault reactivation are not yet controlled nor fully understood. The aim of the seminar is to expose the broad range of observations of induced seismicity and the numerous contributions ranging from experiments at different scales to advances from physics-based models.
